Drummond Trinity CC 1st XI v Haddington on Sat 12 Jul 2008 at 13.00
Drummond Trinity CC Won 72 runs

Both sides rocked up to Inverleith Park Arena just as the ritual weekend rain started. Skipper for the day Lobby agreed a delayed start with the visiting captain and the match started at 1.45 in a reduced 45-over format. Unsurprisingly the DTs were asked to bat first when the toss was lost.

Our openers started in the usual fashion – Jammy mixing aggression with defence and Coolio mixing defence with...er... the odd single. The pitch was doing a bit and there were one or two alarms but the openers saw off the reverse fixture’s danger man (OK – youth) Matty Blades and the innings began to gather momentum. The 50 came up in good time and when Jamal skied one drive too many, to be well caught in the deep by Mitchell - the DTs were on 85. Unfortunately Coolio didn’t outlast his partner by long, getting an inside edge off Kumar on to his stumps. Lobby and Imran made good progress and the score had moved on to 119 before Steve was LBW to one which kept very low. Imran followed soon after for a belligerent 30, hammering the ball straight to Prenter at mid-off who held a sharp catch. Gus and Harry then batted well before Gus became Blades first clean bowled of the day (ironic saying Gus had warned us not to get out to the kid) to be followed soon after by Harry who was caught LBW on the back foot on his crease by the accurate Kumar. With the score on 140-odd for 6 the innings seemed to be running out of steam. Prasad hung around and first Grant and later Nick added some useful runs but the DTs innings eventually petered out a little at 176 at the end of the 45th over. Not a bad score on that wicket but a bit of a disappointment after the start we had made and being 119-3. Young Blades ended up with 4-28 and was their best bowler (again) – I suggest we ask him to stop picking on us next season!

The Haddington innings started with very tight and aggressive spells by Jam who bowled pinch-hitter Kumar cheaply and Imran who cleaned bowled Seb Mann for only 1. After 12 overs they were 16-2 with their two most experienced batsmen Cruickshank and Talbot at the crease but clearly on the defensive. Teach had just bowled his first ball when a heavy shower forced us off again. When the rain cleared the game was resumed with surfaces still pretty wet. With Coolio and Teach bowling the DTS were keen to continue but after one of the batsmen slipped running a quick 2, Haddington were keen to stop. There was little sign of more rain and we had already played 4 or 5 overs since the resumption. The two skippers conferred and agreed to continue but stop at the next sign of rain and call it a day. A short while later Cruickshank decided to retire rather than slip again but the game continued. Teach had danger man Talbot caught at slip by Coolio and the DTs were well on top. Haddington skipper Prenter hit some fine lusty blows in an attempt to turn the game but when the Teacher clean bowled him it seemed victory was almost inevitable. Coolio weighed in with another wicket to be followed by an astonishing one-handed catch by Imran in the deep again of Grant’s bowling. Mrs Murton joined the attack as did spinner Pollitt and both weighed in with a wicket each which added to the running out of Johnson for a pugnacious 18 - wrapped up the Haddington innings for 104. This was a comprehensive victory for the DTs only marred by the poor weather and air of controversy about playing on after the second rain break.
